Scroll down to the bottom of this news article to view Orkney Pilgrimage’s annual report for 2020. The report describes what we were able to achieve to enhance the experience of pilgrims despite the pandemic. We also include a report on the performance of our website, app and Facebook page.

A dramatically subdued tourist season last year meant that pilgrims comprised mainly locals, but many from further afield flocked to support our crowdfunding campaign to create a virtual experience and improve some of our physical infrastructure. Coronavirus has been difficult for everyone and meant we could not host our usual summer events, including the planned launch of our cycle route. With a successful vaccine rollout well underway we are optimistic about the latter half of 2021 and it would be great to run an event in late summer if possible.

Many folk were able to rediscover the treasures on their doorstep during the lockdown and period of restrictions. A testament to increased engagement with the way was our enlarged social media following and contributions to the Calor Rural Community Fund.

In 2020 substantial improvements were made to the path including the moving of fences and furthering safety generally. We established a Resource Subgroup to develop the cohesion of recordings, poems and historical information pilgrims can interact with on the app. All the while we kept you up to date with news articles on the website and posts on the Facebook page. Although we weren’t able to launch the cycle route, it remains ready to go as soon as is feasible under government guidelines.

Alongside all this, one of the biggest achievements of 2020 was the conception and development of the Virtual St Magnus Way, which we hope to launch a part of later this year. Colin Keldie has been out with his drone to capture some spectacular shots which we will incorporate into an interactive experience for pilgrims who cannot complete the Way in person or wish to explore the route from the comfort of their home.

Finally, we developed materials for a Pilgrimage Table in St Magnus Cathedral, the final destination on the St Magnus Way.
