The Dedication of the new St Magnus Way plaque outside the Cathedral

The sun broke through the clouds as we gathered to commission the paving plaque in front of the St Magnus Cathedral and the Pilgrim’s Table inside it. Fran Hollinrake, Cathedral Custodian, spoke on the place of pilgrimage in the history of the cathedral and how it was great to see a renewal of that in the present day with the St Magnus Way drawing pilgrims from many countries as in times gone by.

With water from the Manse Well in Birsay, where Magnus’ bones would probably have been washed before being carried to Kirkwall, Fran inaugurated the paving stone in the same way that the other waystones at the start of each stage of the St Magnus Way were inaugurated in 2018.

We then moved into the cathedral to the Pilgrim’s Table and Rev. Julia Meason dedicated the table with a prayer and a blessing. Many of those involved in the process of getting these two additions to the St Magnus Way experience were present and our thanks go to all that have been involved. Thanks also to LEADER for the funding of the Pilgrim’s Table.
